Hi,

since I have not looked into Elite yet, are there any thinks that I should know once I get started?
What comes to my mind:
  • is there something like a start system that I need to choose to not be too far away from other XSG members?
  • are there sepecific factions I should "make friends" with?
  • Any "DON'T do that" stuff I have to be aware of?
  • Most importantly: How do I get that stupid client installed ... always stops the download and does not resume .. already reinstalled it from scratch and let it run over night .. somehow frustrating.

Thanks!

I recommend watching Gaz's stream on Twitch TV and hound him with questions regarding the game. Not something that I would ever do :-)

Also always dock in time and never spend 10 mins banging into the outside, only to find when eventually make it though that poxy hole that the timer has run out and you cannot re-apply for docking at this point. Then get blown out of the sky. Also something I have never done.

Sorry I cant be of more help :-)

  • other than kickstarter backers you can't choose where you start, it's random
  • factions: up to you
  • if you pick up cargo in space don't get yourself scanned by the authorities! (ask Gaz about it)
  • you can allways reset your character, so might aswell go ahead and try all the stupid stuff yu can imagine and just reset for a clean start
  • install: hm, havent had any issues, but installed it during beta

Yeah - Watch my stream or catch me on ts for more info.

Also, try putting the Launcher/Game in Exemption from your Anti-Virus (if you run it) some issues have been spotted with slow speeds due to A/V.

Also watch Gaz's stream to understand how not to stay adrift in space because you forgot to refuel and don't have any scoops on your ship. It really isn't problem if you have few days time  just to travel to next station.

Ah yes I forgot to mention if you wanna get out of this situation quickly you have to initiate self destruct or as Gaz demonstrated going out with fire works.

Hey Gaz how's it going

Cheers Ez. It was a mere oversight on my part.... fuel is so over rated anyway

Not done it again (yet).

Drop in on TS anytime I'm on, and excuse me when I chat to my viewers from time to time as they ask questions too, and I can try to help people with as much info as I know.

I definitly will hang out in TS when trying elite ... Oh and thanks for the install tip .. put that folder in the withe list for my antivirus and it work ... could not check it out if it really works but at least it finished the install according to the luncher just now.

So I played about an hour and a half yesterday after 14 hours of flight, and it's, well, strange.

First things first, watching the tutorials is a must. It teaches you how to actually play the game. There are lots of buttons and lots of switches. I for example opted not to have lateral thrusters, only the forward thrusters which made docking quite tricky. Will have to bind those keys too, seeing how they are important.

The only issue I had was that I played in Open play and had an instance where a station declined my docking requests for about 15 minutes. Dropping out and into Solo play did resolve that though, so I suppose it was because lots of people were trying to dock at the same time.

All in all, it looks like a great game, however it needs some getting used to, especially with keyboard and mouse. I have tried a go with trading but lost 15 credits.

As for joysticks, I have one.. an old logitech freedom 2.4, for which I'm missing the USB connector that makes the bloody thing work. Never buy cordless joysticks if you ask me. It also takes 3 AA batteries.

The game, like the original will not hold your hand in any way. In fact having tutorials and manuals available is almost cheating compared to what we had back in the day.

When I'm streaming over the festive period, hop on or ask some questions as myself or others in the know will help you out too

Working my way through the training missions.

Any other tips for a starter ?

What is the best way of control? Keyboard and mouse or joystick ?
And ... what joystick ?

Well, the big revelation for me was: A "pirate" is a ship that is wanted. A ship that is a player has "CMDR" in front of the name. If that's not there, it's an NPC.

Also, if you go through the airlock and can't immediately find your landing pad, look up. If still nothing, do a 180 roll and look up(down). I almost got billed for loitering because I couldn't find my landing pad. Turns out it was directly above me.

As for control, I suppose a joystick would be a better choice, though I'm not sure how you can manage 6 degrees of movement with one joystick (and perhaps a thrust control thing). One that you can use here you can also use in Star Citizen mehopes.

Googling around it seems that Thrustmaster's T-Flight HOTAS is a decent joystick, though if you guys have anything else I'd gladly listen :-)

the tflight is an ok stick but only has one HAT switch, I run with a Saitek X52 pro which has 3 HATs...and still could use more But a nice and practical addon is Voiceattack so you don't need to touch the keyboard when using a joystick, and it's only 8€!

Hmm, good point about the HAT switch.

I'm also thinking about the CH stick and throttle. Will have to look around and try them out to see which fits me best.

@Gaz: I watch the video of your last stream yesterday, man, you make everything look simple and easy... Looking forward to applying my newly gained knowledge in the field (err... space?)

Practice
Joystick
Practice

That's all it is really. I'll be online later today now I've shifted this awful flu I've had.

I'll be on TS if you need anything.

Will do, thanks!

Until then: Is there any way to team up? Like creating a squad or something to share the bounty when shooting down pirates for example, or do missions together?

There is Group play but it's not traditional squad play.

They are looking to implement a true Grouping system early in the new year, a bit like a "squadron or wing" scenario in the Open game.

If you find someone, then you're doing well currently in Group play as it can be a bit hit and miss.

Finally got a second in the game .. I needed all the time to get the X52 Pro set up that I could take off and land . if you use the Saitek progamming tool and unbind all that extra modes etc. you can use lots of buttons and I hardly need the mouse+keyb. while flying (or trying). I like that pretty much.

Oh and I wondered, since I preorded I should have an extra ship but I can't find it ... I just can start with the sidewinder as new Commander ... any tips here? Could find the paintjobs ... but not the other ship itself, or is the Sidew. the better starter?
