So I was planning to wait till Xmas to do this but a few things were on sale this week so I may have gone a bit insane and just ordered all this:

Will be selling my 'old' Geforce 780 once this rig is up and running if anyone is interested too.

There's a 2nd hand X99 SOC mobo going on Overclockers Members Market for £190 btw.

What make/model is your 780 Nick?

The 780 is an MSI Geforce GTX 780 Gaming Edition OC 3072MB, still got the original box too I think.

Haha! I nearly did the same thing yesterday but resisted

I was thinking socket 1150 rather than 2011 as I thought most games don't use the extra cores yet but what are your thoughts? I guess 2011 is more future proof.

Honestly it was a tossup between the two, the 1150's are still solid chips but I figured if this was gonna last a while and with me streaming a lot which is CPU heavy it might be better to have more cores, plus the 5930k gives me more PCIE lanes so I can run both cards at 16x and have a pcie SSD (the m2 card), running at x2 or x4.

Also a nice side bonus is the free games they including in the new nvidia cards, you can get farcry 4, the new assassins creed or the crew so I guess I have some new games to try out when everything arrives

Ah yeah good point on the PCI x16 lanes. Also DDR4 has to be good! Think I may lean that way

...

Currently got a 3 year old 2500k OC'ed to 4.2Ghz, might keep it around incase I decide to try streaming with a dedicated encoding box but I don't need a 780 to do that

I was in the same boat, saved up for a new build but there's not a big enough improvement with current chips over my 2600K.

Waiting on Skylake and beyond tbh.

Looks like I made a slight miscalculation when working out the CPU cooler size as pushing air up to the top of the case it doesn't fit with the RAM and in the normal position pushing air out the back of the case it is like 3-4mm too wide and doesn't quite fit in with the gfx card (which is slightly bigger on the cpu side than normal as it has a heat spreader over the back of the card).

An alternative has been ordered but it means I'm stuck with a room full of spare parts until saturday

On a side note if anyone is on the lookout for a beastly new CPU cooler I have one going spare now, assuming you have either ram with low/no heatsinks on and/or a gfx card that doesn't have anything on the back (like a heat shield/support frame), then you should be ok. Happy to sell it at less than what I paid if anyone is actually interested.

Gigabyte are making some nice stuff now, at least they've moved away from that awful blue PCB, just wish they didn't choose Orange for their SOC range though

Yeah, and they have UK RMA address incase something breaks so no crazy shipping stuff to the EU somewhere and they do a nice upgrade offer atm I think where if you buy a new mobo you can upgrade it free/cheap to a newer version sometime in the next 3 years.

Yeah the Two For One deal is limited to the Z97 motherboards which is quite tempting if you can get hold of a cheap 4790K or something.

Free upgrade to an equivalent next gen within 3 years. Tempting me for a while, just need a bloody chip though

Not sure if this is enough to tempt you Gaz, but Intel are doing cashback deals on various cpu + mobo combos, it's not really advertised anywhere I can see, only spotted it mentioned by someone on the OCUK forums:

Yeah it's a combo deal... was trying to get it cheap

Plus, Aria are doing an Intel bundle + free 256GB SSD today too on X99 boards...lol.

I'm sure my 2600K will survive a while longer, but a cheap upgrade to a Skylake mobo in the future will be tempting if I go down the Z97 route now as I can use my DDR3 in it still and then transfer the 2600K to a mATX system to act as a server/encoding box for streaming. Well, that's been the plan for the 2600K for a while anyway.

Yeah, always tempting to wait but all the info out of intel so far suggests the next lot of cpu's arent gonna be amazingly faster, until AMD come out with anything close to decent it's just gonna be like 5% speed boost each revision.

Well just dropped the bomb on a Gigabyte Z97X-UD5H-BK Black Edition motherboard & an i7 4790K CPU.

Small upgrade over the 2600k, but I'll get £37.50 back from Intel and a FREE motherboard update of my choosing within 3 years from Gigabyte which will technically save me £180 as that's how much the UD5H cost.

Bargain really with free next day delivery from OcUK, plus 1% cashback from Quidco
