For anybody who may like to try their hand in the world of digital art, I can thoroughly recommend getting a Wacom graphics tablet. Having recently purchased a Wacom 5 medium for a bargain price (thanks eBay), this little fella has undergone a bit of a cleanup from this:

To this:

Using this as my first exercise I basically redid the entire thing layer by layer and I think the difference is remarkable - even if I do say so myself! Pen control for the outline is sooooooo much easier using a stylus over a mouse, and the shading... ohhhhhh the shading The nib pressure sensitivity using the airbrush tool in Photoshop is just an absolute pleasure. Layer mask, area fill, and a couple of colours for highlights/shading, and you're off.

Can not recommend this highly enough. I mean, it's a well-specific piece of hardware, but it even doubles up as a trackpad for Win8 gestures and suchlike if that helps justify the price (no? just buy one anyway!).

The Wacom 4, 5 and Pro use the same tech (as well as their current 'budget' line Pen & Touch) just with different bells and whistles. They're expensive to buy new, but as usual eBay is your friend, and if you're in the UK then the Cash Converters website is actually a great place to get a bargain!

Regarding my little decal project, I am still waiting to hear back from the US tax office before I can submit it. In the meantime, that little fella needs a name. Contenders so far include 'Jack the Hammer' and 'Captain Jack', but I'm open to suggestions...

Looking awesome. My children (aged 2 and 3) have already surpassed my graphical talents, so... yea. "Jack the Hammer" is pretty good. Maybe "Hammer the Fist"? Or "Sergeant Hammer".

Cheers buddy.

By the way, it's fun to browse the Player Studio Forums from time to time to see what's going on. Mostly long threads on helmet design and refinement, but some cool stuff in there. Anyway, here's the link to Jack the Hammer.

My second decal, much simpler, is in this thread and I've called it 'Revolver':

Unless T-Ray pops in and says it's shit I'll probably submit that one - although there has been some feedback that the detail may be lost when equipped on infantry. I agree, but the shape is solid so it should still look like the chambers of a 6-gun even if you can't make out the finer details.

Anyway, it's all moot as I'm still waiting to get registered with Player Studio. On the upside I'm currently in regular email correspondence with Rick Reynolds ('Syrah', @Storn, head of Player Studio and a true gentleman) to troubleshoot my application.

Any more ideas for decals - in particular something for the outfit - send them my way and I'll see what I can do. I'm avoiding helmet-making for the moment simply because 3D takes me too bloody long and I've barely got any free time as it is

Finally registered with the tax man. Submitted both of the above designs (slightly modified 'Revolver' to add some detail) so let's see if they like either one!

Okay. Here's the update:

  • Jack the Hammer: Declined - not visually compelling. In the words of T-Ray 'Not visually compelling means I can not see someone wanting to buy it'. You can see it in T-Ray's declined folder in Ep13 of Inside Player Studio at 37:34.
  • Revolver: Valid. This is automated and just means I have submitted the correct files in the correct format. However, since I submitted this at the same time as Jack, I have a little hope. Well... had, since I saw it in his list in Ep13 of Inside Player Studio (17:55) where he says 'so... we've got some other submissions in here... that probably won't make the cut'. But it's not declined yet, so fingers crossed. I submitted a greyscale and the TR version from the slightly pimped-up versions below (they like greyscale for non-faction specific so they can tint it themselves):

Anyway, I'm having a blast with my tablet and have also downloaded some 3D programs to start messing with that. Helmets! In the meantime I put down a quick sketch for some faction-specific HQ/Veteran/something-like-that decals ( see thread here):

I'm also working on making some flaming faction logo decals, but that's taking a hell of a lot of time to get going and I don't think it will scale well in-game. However, it's a really good Photoshop exercise regardless.

As for getting in-game. Well as you can see I've been a busy bee, but I'm logging in now for some Friday Fun!
