So I played for a few hours last night and this is what I have to say so far.

I only own an Aurora so that's all  I can fly so far.
I'm not in multiplayer yet.

I gotta say first of all that I totally love it, even though it's a bit frustrating.

So the Aurora that you get to fly is really weak, like super weak. With little pew pew lasers and it handles like a van with flat tires. I'm sure this is intentional and I'm not really sure if it's TOO bad or not. Apparently the 300i is a complete beast in comparison.

The guns on the Aurora don't do much damage and run out of charge really quickly and recharge really slowly, again it's supposed to be bad, but I'm not sure if it's TOO bad.

There are already approximately 9231090 posts on the official forums slating the "Flight model" as a piece of shit and "omg the controls, this is warthunder arcade mode in space, I want 8 degrees of freedom and I want to be immediately awesome at it and because i'm not it's because the controls are bad and arcade *splutter* *froth*"
There are things I don't like about the flight controls, in short, the ship follows the movement of the mouse, and the gimballed guns follow the mouse cursor, the keyboard throttles and rolls.
I'm sort-of happy with that, apart from the fact you cant invert Y axis for flying, but that's an easy fix. What i dont like is how you have to drive and aim at the same time, it makes flight really "bumpy" for the lack of a better word.
However, you can perform some awesome manoeuvres even in a shitty Aurora. By toggling the flight modes you can slide around asteroids keeping your guns on your enemy, as long as you don't make yourself sick from your pilot wobbling around due to the G forces.
The pilot G forces make it really hard to keep your guns on target and might be a bit OTT, not sure if it's as bad in the other ships...

Anyway..

TL : DR - Arena commander is freaking awesome, but not without it's issues and foibles.

I put up an hour long vid on Youtube last night in glorious 1080p which Youtube probably butchered

Watch on Youtube and fullscreen it at 1080p for best visuals.

I've managed to potter about in my Aurora a bit, too. Got lots to learn - mostly controls - but should get there eventually.

First impressions - the Aurora is not made for dogfighting! The cockpit window frame just destroys my target tracking (and I'm still getting used to the radar as well). Basically I agree with most of what Nal said about handling, etc, but in the grand scheme of things maybe the Aurora actually should suck since it's kinda the Fiat Punto of spacecraft.

Currently using joystick + keyboard (mouse just feels weird) and once keybinding makes an appearance I think things will be easier for me - I'll just remap everything to the original X-Wing controls and be a happy bunny

How did you think it fares compared to ED? If anyone has pledged for both that is

Both are going to be different animals, but similar.

I'm impressed with both and like the styling of each

Dam, did not have much time the last days but finally got to fly around a bit.
I seem to really suck at it and maybe at some point I can get flight lessons from those people that already slide around an asteroid while keeping the enemy in sight.

Still I'm not complaining because I'm sure it's just a mixture of getting used to it and some freedom of key mapping. I enjoyed it really to just fly around too and see me crash into various things .

I had the chance to fly all 3 available models and the gattlings of the Hornet just eat through the enemies and have a nice/better tracking system (you just need to be near the targeting cycle). So its much easier to hit and destroy something in a hornet then in an Aurora.

I started of with M+KB and so far like it better (since I never was used to play with a HOTAS). But I got from a friend his old Thrustmaster HOTAS X and tried it out too. (I could not run the game once I plugged it in because of Windows 8.1 ... but Windows 7 compatibility mode fixed it for me!!) Well I think with a bit of practice I could get to love the HOTAS thing since it adds to the feeling even as of now I'm much worse in flying (if that is even possible)!

Personally it tried to figure out the HUD some it is not very responsive and I find it hard to find my way around (to change energy distribution etc.). It took me a while to notice that if the missile rag stated unarmed, that it will only be armed when starting targeting stuff. Well makes sense but well me arcane flyer ... was looking into how to change the missile type but well there is only one at the moment anyway. The only thing that was easier was the customization of  weapon groups (not really a point in it at the moment since the preset is fine).

Over all loving it and as stated, for a pre Alpha it is impressive as it is!
